LancasterOnline reader JoLynn Cottle shared the recipe for the much-talked about red velvet cake from the Akron Restaurant. A recent post of brought a lot of reminiscing about the cake.
Cottle said her great aunt, Dottie Kautz, worked at the restaurant for many years and that it is the "best cake ever."
Reader Brian Koppenhaver commented "What I would do to have the recipes of the famous Red Velvet Cake and icing from the Akron Restaurant. I imagine someone who baked there over the years must have it. It was to die for!"
Well, here you go Brian!
Red Velvet Cake
1 1/2 c sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1tbsp cocoa powder
1 c sour milk. ( add 1 tsp vinegar to regular milk)
1 oz red food coloring.
Mix all ingredients and bake at 350° for 25-30 min.
2/3 c scalded milk ( cooled )
1/2 c soft butter
1/2 c Crisco shortening
1 egg white
2 tsp vanilla
Beat butter, Crisco and egg white. Add sugar, vanilla and milk when cooled. Beat until fluffy.
