Godless (Netflix)
“Here’s a mystery” are the first (sung) words you hear in this western set in 1880s New Mexico, and its first 30 minutes are full of them. The enigma of what caused the deaths of almost all La Butte’s men; how a rancher (Michelle Dockery) came to be widowed and, indeed, how she came to be a rancher; the identity of the fugitive rider (Jack O’Connell) she puts up. Then there is the 30-strong posse. Vigilantes? Bandits? Christian fundamentalists? Why is their leader (Jeff Daniels) going to such lengths to hunt down an enemy; and why was an idiot made sheriff?
Most of these puzzles are solved in the opener’s second half, which also contains its only action sequence. Scripted…
